‘Verona’ is a beautiful mountainous area in NSW, between the South East Forests National Park and the ocean. It is the source of the pure rainwater used in ‘Verona Natural’ soaps. The Verona Natural range includes soaps for skin prone to acne, psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema;

  • Convallaria Soap: for skin prone to dermatitis. Convallaria is a plant that is also known as Glovewort, because of its ability to heal hands beset with chronic dermatitis.
  • Nutmeg and Sandalwood Soap: for acne-prone skin. Sandalwood oil is well known for its powerful antibacterial properties. Nutmeg is very popular as the main ingredient in cosmetic acne scrubs.
  • Borage Soap: for skin prone to eczema. Borage plants produce oil-rich seeds. Their oil contains up to 25% GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), which is anti-inflammatory and assists in treating eczema. Borage is also a great restorative for skin that is damaged by ageing, stretch marks or scars.
  • Oregon Grape Soap: for skin prone to psoriasis. Oregon Grape is an American herb, renowned as a liver tonic. It is also especially suited to scaly skin problems such as psoriasis.

It also includes:

  • Baby / Sensitive Skin Soap: This pure and gentle soap contains no essential oils, herbs or other additives. It is safe for even the most sensitive skin.
  • Oatmeal and Mandarin Soap: to refresh and exfoliate your skin. This soap contains finely and coarsely ground oatmeal in a moisturising base. It thoroughly buffs away dead skin cells to leave your skin soft and smooth. The mandarin essential oil adds freshness to this invigorating soap.

Verona Natural soaps are also perfect for healthy skin and hair. Made from a base of olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, pure rainwater and lye, use of these mild formulations requires little or no skin moisturiser or hair conditioner. These soaps last extremely well and have an abundant, creamy lather. Soaps retail at $3.95 a bar.

Note: Some bars may have a thin white deposit on the surface. This forms naturally during the curing process and is completely harmless.

The ‘natural’ soap market: a consumer minefield!

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as ‘natural soap’ (although some plants do produce a soap-like sap). However, some soaps are certainly safer and more natural than others.

Most mass-produced ‘soap’ is not actually soap at all. Rather, it is solid detergent; a compound that contains many synthetic chemicals. If you closely read the label on a big-name ‘soap’ bar, you’ll see what I mean! Some of these chemicals are hazardous to us and to nature.

Real soap is made from oil and/or fat, which is ‘saponified’ (turned into soap) by reacting with a caustic substance such as lye (sodium hydroxide). People have used this method for hundreds of years to make safe, biodegradable soap.

The most natural soaps are those that: (1) have a base of oil/fat, water and lye only; and (2) do not contain any synthetic (artificial) colours, fragrances, preservatives or other additives. Many synthetic skin care products claim to be natural, just because they contain a tiny amount of plant extract!

If we want safe and effective skin care, we need to closely read product labels and choose carefully.
